Description
The TM44 is a new module for controlling trains on your layout and reporting train positions. The TM44 is part of the Dinamo Plug and Play concept, but can also be used within an existing Dinamo system if desired.
What does the TM44 offer?
- Control of 4 blocks
- Train detection in 4 sections per block
- Control of analog trains with pulse width modulation in 127 steps
- Constant lighting for analog trains
- Control of digital trains via DCC
- Short-circuit protection per block
- Communication via RS485
- Single power supply
All connections on the TM44 consist of screw-terminal connectors or clip terminals. This means you don’t need to solder to connect the TM44.
Block control and train detection are electrically 100% compatible with the TM-H / CD16 combination. Both modules can be used interchangeably without any problems.
The TM44 is only supplied fully assembled. Due to the large number of SMD components, it is virtually impossible for a hobbyist to build this module themselves.
Block control
The TM44 has outputs to control 4 blocks individually and independently. Control per block can be both analog and digital.
Switching between analog and digital happens dynamically under the control of the RM-U module. This allows analog and digital trains to actually run together on the same track.
Train detection
Each block output of the TM44 is split into 4 sections for train position reporting via current detection. This enables accurate train positioning in all situations.
Unlike many other occupancy detectors, the TM44’s current detection is fully symmetrical. The same electronics are included in both rails, which significantly increases reliability and accuracy at block transitions and reverse loops.
Analog trains
Analog trains are controlled via pulse width modulation. This method ensures excellent running characteristics, provided the rolling stock is in good technical condition.
Thanks to pulse width control, driving at crawl speed is easily possible. Both forward and reverse driving are supported. With 63 speed steps per direction, equipment with varying characteristics can always be controlled naturally.
Constant lighting (analog)
The TM44 can (optionally) provide constant lighting for analog rolling stock. The lighting is controlled with an AC voltage of approximately 18 kHz and is adjustable in 16 levels.
Constant lighting can be switched on and off dynamically per block. Additionally, it is possible to switch locomotive lighting directionally. This does require a simple auxiliary circuit in the locomotive.
Digital trains
With digital control, the TM44 provides both the digital power per block and the DCC packets for the trains.
DCC packets are generated separately per block and exclusively for the train located in that block. This makes the solution highly scalable. Up to 10 DCC packets can be generated per block, sufficient for multi-traction, control cars, and extensive functions.
The management of DCC information across the various blocks and TM44 modules is handled by the RM-U.
Short-circuit protection
The TM44 features short-circuit protection per block. As soon as the current exceeds 2A, the module switches off the voltage within a few microseconds.
Once the overload is cleared, the voltage is automatically switched back on within 10 milliseconds. Any overload is immediately reported to the controlling computer.
Power supply
The TM44 only requires a single power supply of 8 to 24V DC. This voltage is also the voltage supplied to the rails.
In practice, a supply voltage of 15 to 18V is an excellent choice for most applications.
Communication
Communication between the RM-U and the TM44 modules takes place via a serial network connection based on RS485.
This allows distances of up to 1,200 meters to be bridged, so TM44 modules can be placed decentrally (e.g., under the layout), close to the blocks they control. This saves significantly on wiring.
For the network connection, you can choose between making your own connection cables or using standard RJ45 network cables.
